Captain Richard FitzWilliams' SCA Home page.

Persona:
Richard was born either in Normandy and made a squire at 16
years of age to a knight in the Norman army prior to the invasion
and conquering
of England in 1066. Being of the 5th son of a extremely minor noble
and having no estates to support himself, Richard journeyed to Southern
Italy to seek his fortunes with the Normans there. Richard joined
with Bohemond as
a mercenary during the Norman conquest/fighting in the south of Italy
and Sicily against the Greeks and Arabs there. He was granted a small
estate along the coast of Liguria near Imperia.
In 1080 at the age of 30 Richard settled at his estate to
have a family. He then joined the First Crusade in 1096 at the ripe
age of 46 as his
heart was stirred at the plight of the Christian pilgrims in the
holy land.
He sold the estate to pay for his journey, left his family in Bari
under Norman cousins ruling there. He then took up the cross and
followed Bohemond to the holy
land until Jerusalem was taken back. On his return home across land,
he stopped in Antioch to visit yet more cousins that had settled
there. Having found a grand opportunity to settle in himself, Richard
opened
an inn called The Flower of Syria. His family was sent for and they
resided there for many years. Richard's wife succumbed to plague
in 1120. He then sold his estate, giving half to his family and the
rest
to the newly formed Templars which he joined at age 70. he died himself
two years later visiting the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
