Garb Guidelines for the Outremer Company

Please make an attempt to make, beg, borrow, steal or buy at least a basic garb kit and follow this page as a guideline  to assist you in getting your kit done.

Ideas for the Gentlemen: 1.0 Rules for Men's garb [Basic Kit]
.01 Shirt: One linen (off-white or natural). 
.02 Hat -or- linen coif: A simple hat should be with you at all times or coif. Elinor makes nice square hats. Coifs are simple to make, cheap to buy. 
.03 Hood:  A mantle-hood -or- liripipe-hood is acceptable in lieu of the hat.
.04 Braies: Linen underpants, long or short to your period. Wool optional. 
.05 Tunic: Linen or wool tunic, T-styled: Viking, Saxon, Norman or later period. This is the basic tunic of the Company and everyone should own at least one. Colors should be subdued or Company colors. Simple is better. Develop more elaborate cotes as needed.
.06 Gardecorpe: (optional) Wool or heavy linen with sleeves, may have 'holes in sleeves for arms' solid to wrist.  Lined preferred.
.07 Cloak: A black wool [Fall/Winter] or black heavy linen company cloak with red cross formee on each shoulder. Cross should be approx. 6-9".
.08 Extreme Heat: Wear your undershirt, braes and stockings rolled down. Use your hat to keep sun off. barefooted allowed.
Ideas for the Ladies: 2.0 Rules for Lady's garb [Basic Kit]
.01 Head cloth, Coif, Wimple or Hat
.02 Stockings: Made of woolen or linen cloth. 
.03 Chemise: (optional) Off-white linen, long or short for your period.
.04 Dress or Gown [to your period]: Woolen or Linen. Must have short sleeves at least with pinned or pointed on sleeves. Light, close-fitting and very full-skirted.
.05 Overdress [optional]: Woolen, linen or fabric that appears period to your chosen time. Sleeved, plain, ideal for cool weather.
.06 Extreme Heat: Blouses and skirts may be worn as are other Eastern garb to remain cool until such time the sun or heats resides to redress in period garb. Simple T tunics, barefooted.
Ideas for the Entire Company: 3.0 Rules for garb and items for the entire company
.01 Shoes: Sandals and non period boots may be used until the individual is able to make or buy a pair of period shoes. Making period leather shoes can be fun and experiencing.
.02 Belt: A narrow belt with correct medieval buckle. Black for Company Members, Red for Squires, white for Knights [KSCA]. Company Belts will be issued once hardware is cast. Not overly long for men.
.03 Garters: Same rule for colors as Belt. Leg wraps for earlier periods.
.04 Purse: It is encouraged each member own a small purse for essentials of period use and modern $$ and ID.
.05 Knife: A knife is essential to each member. If a dagger is owned, forego the knife. We make knives in the shop constantly.
.06 Eating utensils: Spoon, cup bowl and/or plate, preferably wood,  and hand made in the shop. Also a small canvas or leather haversack to carry them in with your marching rations.
.07 Cloak: Linen is okay but woolen is more preferred for period use. Even during Summer nights, a chill air can appear.
.08 Surcoats
a The jacket or surcoat shall be in period style to the rest of your kit especially your armor. The use of wool or linen is encouraged though for SCA use, poplin or heavy denim/cotton for the wear and tear they will take in battle. The surcoats will be black throughout with the Company device/badge center chest. Fighters: No other badges or patches will be allowed on your surcoats except the Midrealm badge and the Pentemerian Regional badge. Knights may trim their coats in white. Squires may trim their coats in red. [coats] Mod:05/04/04

b Standard company parade dress is the split black and gold tunic, dress or surcoat. Gold Dexter, black sinister. The typical piece is made from black linen and white linen [which is dyed using RIT dye: 2 golden yellows & 1 tan]. The gold carries over from the front to the back [see here]. Mod:05/16/04 The full emblem center chest is only worn on battle garb. Badges will be issued to be sewn on the left breast or left sleeve as preferred per the piece you opt to wear. Company trim will be issued prior to Pennsic of 2004 to be sewn on this parade garment or your battle surcoat. It will is much like this: 

.09 Arabic Garb: Arabic garb is very easy to make and great to wear for comfort on those hot summer days. Example

.10 Templar wear: Knights: white tunic, white cloak, white surcoat or whatever combo you prefer even intermingled with Arabic overdress. Serjants: Black if you are an armored fighter, brown if you are not a combatant. Red cross center front and back or single small red cross if it is a simple brown tunic. Others may wear nunnery kit or a simple tunic kit with a red cross over the heart. Also a monk's kit may be worn.
.11 Badges & Pins
a Company badges are to be worn by full members only! The badge is a red cross formee trimmed gold with a rampant white wolf  Dexter brandishing a sword in each hand center. (badge
  1. Cloth 'patches' are not allowed presently as they do not appear period. (Free standing smaller crosses) are allowed with approval by the Draper.
  2. Try to hand embroider or obtain the cross and wolf free standing badges [small] for garb.
  3. Metal or similar painted company devices are allowed. 
  4. SCA badges and awards are allowed. Try to not wear everything in camp conditions and save the flash for courts.

b Personal devices: Worked into your tourney shield only, not war shields. Allowed as a pin or belt shield or incorporated into a garbs theme per your period. Debating other options still. Mod:05/16/04

c Please keep pins down to a minimum. 1-3 is more than enough for any individual. Company, Kingdom, and/or love-interest. SCA awards should be maintained on a chain to wear at courts if so desired. Mod:05/16/04

d Company trim is being looked into for dressier garb along with sleeve motto. No other type of trim on company surcoat is allowed and should be considered a breach of the rules unless agreed upon by the Commander, the Draper at a meeting of the Company.

e Company belts are still in the works. See: 3.02

.12 Colors
As is possible, please try to make clothing from muted colors: black, brown, dull red, mustards and red browns. Black is the Company color.
