PERIOD KIT GUIDELINES
KEY: K=Knight, S/S=Serjants/Squires, M=Man at Arms, B=Brother, P=Page
Tunics: Cotton, Wool, or Linen. Color as per chart.
Tunic Length: K: Knee to Ankle length as preferred. S/S: Knee
or higher. M: Higher than knee.
MaArms: Brown tunic red cross over heart or chest centered.
Under tunic: white/off white cotton or linen as St Charles or similar to
period.
Over tunics: Dress surcoat/overtunic. Black. Red cross formee
center chest, trimmed mustard/gold/soft yellow. 10” x 10”. Options: Lined or
unlined. V or U shaped neckline. No
square cut necklines. No sleeves, Short sleeved to elbow or full-length
sleeve. Should be big enough to go over two (2) undertunics.
Hose or trewes: Period hosen to be used. Basic colors per
chart. Leg wraps or Wickelbanders optional but encouraged on trewes. No
pantaloons of eastern styled pants.
Colors: See chart
Trim: See chart for placement of trim per rank. Hand sewn
period designs preferred.
Cloaks: Optional: Wool basic or similar for foul weather.
Company Cloak: Wool, Linen or cotton, black, lined if desired.
String or similar ties for neck. Hood shall be small and not extreme pointed.
Red cross shall be on the lapels / shoulders, size to be determined, placement
see chart. Length midcalf.
Coifs: white cotton or linen in period fashion.
Hats: wool, cotton, or linen per period use. Colors to be
determined as styles.
SCA rank chains: these will not be worn in period kit.
Discussion to come.
Belts: As per SCA rank. Thin belts shall be used as a
supplementary belt for dagger, knife, and / or pouch.
Pouch: Cloth or leather: period style only. Simple round
drawstring allowed.
Spurs: Not allowed.
Shoes: Period shoes. For now, due to expense, camouflaged shoes
allowed, slight points, preferred period shoes. Moccasins
allowed if leg wraps used to hide majority of boot.
ARMOR:
Padded gambeson. Linen or cotton sandwiched over cotton
batting. No sleeve, short sleeve, or full sleeved. Natural white, or color as
per chart. Hip to mid thigh in length.
Pull over only, split to groin; add gores to keep skirt full
if needed.
Padded chausses if
desired, full hip to foot, ankle option allowed if dressed over in wickelbands.
No crosscheck designs, vertical rows preferred.
Mail: period mail preferred: butted, round ring riveted, flat
ring riveted, welded.
Short sleeved or long. Waist to knee length, split. SS or
cold steel. Lighter gauge like 18 okay.
Scale & Lamellar: Scale: preferred fish scale design or
period documented style. Lamellar, Period plates as per documentation for Mediterranean
cultures or Byzantine. Plates preferred up, laced properly, trimmed in hide,
basic steel.
Mail greaves okay but not necessary due to weight. Faux
lowed mail greaves okay if camo’d okay.
Plate front greaves or Schynbalds for Knights only.
Coifs: Padded for armor. Thin. Optional.
Mail coif: no dagging. Prefer no brass trim. Square face
preferred.
Helms: Spangenhelm, Norman one piece, Basic steel cap, Early
Kettle Hat and D face-plated great helm are allowed. Preferable kit is spangen
or one piece.
Gloves: Leather, basic, natural colors. Mail mittens. Leather
mittens. Alternatively, open hand.
Shields: Three (3) styles: Long heater or crusader shield 4’
long (a flat topped kite); these are required for the knights. Round top kite
shield: 4’ long, round bottom slightly to prevent breaking. Domed boss
preferred center. Round shield: Minimum 3’ round, center boss. All shields
should have a period war strap made of leather for caring on back. Period style
leather strap grips on inside. Shields can be made a number of different ways
but 2 x .25” 2’ x 4’, glued and bent as needed, covered in cloth and glued.
Colored outside per chart.
WEAPONS: Wood
club, warclub (studded), period mace, period sword, dagger, period two-handed
ax, period spear, crossbow. Spears for adults only due to trip hazard.
*Templar Kits are only to be worn when the Call is made by the leadership of Outremer.
**Wearing of Company Colors
and dress armor will not be allowed unless asked by the Commander of
the Company. In Company dress kit, you represent the Company and it
will not be tolerated for anyone to wear the colors/kit and become
intoxicated etc in public or represent yourself as speaking for the
Company. Develop your own simple surcoat etc to wear if you feel the
need to dress in full dress kit and walk around at events.
***The Draper of the
Company shall hold inspection of kit prior to walking out into public.
In lieu of the Draper the Commander shall inspect.
****The only colors that shall be flown as a banner in Outremer Camps or events shall be the Company Banner.

1. Full Members may wear their Company Surcoat; their Company surcoat & Company cloak; their Company Cloak over period garb and/or armor.
2. Initiates are allowed to wear their Black Tunics and carry a shield and sword.
3. Candidates shall wear plain black surcoats but not be able to bear sword and shield unless ordered to do so in lieu of spear.
